INTRODUCING SHIR SHALOM!
At the beginning of this school year, the CBS Youth Chorus began to "re-brand" and the students decided on a new name for our ensemble. The new logo is one I created. Inspired by the CBS logo and the graphic nature of both Hebrew letters and musical notation. (If any parents are or know an actual graphic designer who would like to take this logo a bit further and put some spit shine on it have them e mail me and I can send a high resolution file for them to work with--or if someone can simply create a vector file for me--we have a budget of $0 to offer for such a skill...) It is my intention to have shirts and kippot designed for performances, using this logo. I hope that these changes will be the first step in making our ensemble appealing to more of our Hebrew School students to join. The more voices we add the more we can do!

5780, here I come! The CBS religious school is going to run out of titles to assign me. Pretty soon my introduction is going to sound like something George RR Martin dreamed up. This year, I am taking on the role of teaching music on Tuesdays, as well as Sundays, and Chorus, and Tot Shabbat.... ... Oh, and 6th grade trope. *meep*! ... I spent last spring and summer preparing for this new role, and I am actually really pumped about this new adventure! Cantor Hasha generously spent many a Friday afternoon mentoring me in this new role, as well as helping me freshen up my own command of chanting trope. I had the two wonderful experiences of attending both Hava Nashira, the week-long music and song-leading program hosted by the URJ at OSRUI in WI, and NewCAGE10 in Portland, OR. Wow! Both conferences left me feeling lifted up, saturated with information to process, and better prepared to take on this new responsibility. Since both of these conferences lie under the Reform umbrella of Jewish flavors, a lot of the music and styles of worship were new to me. Some I have woven into my own practice, some I'll leave, but all of it (I hope) will help me better serve our diverse community at CBS. - So, why this website? Why a blog? One of the many golden resources I was given was the master copy of the CBS Religious School Trope Packet. If you've been taught trope or have an older child that went through 6th grade with Cantor Hasha, you will recognize the multi colored pages of the three pronged folder you are first given in class. For myself, I wanted to be able to study from this Xeroxed Tome wherever I had a secluded moment and my brain was feeling spongy. And this being 2019, that meant I had the cloud in my pocket, but not an 8.5X11 sized pocket to carry my folder in. So I scanned the pages to pdf files (this will also make copying the folder for future classes a lot easier, and acts as insurance against flood/fire/loss). I thought I'd just put them in a Dropbox or Google Drive and be done with it. But what about all the other ways I could use technology to help my students study (maybe I'm being optimistic that they will!)? So, here we are! The blog is so I can keep students families up to date on what we are doing in class, what future dates they should be aware of, and categorize them so students in chorus and/or music can find the information that is relevant to them. Think of this as my teachers "what we did" email. In fact, I'm hoping I can figure out how to email this to you as well. I won't be posting anything personal about individual students, and if I ever do use a name for some reason, I will only be using first names for privacy. - If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! שנה טובה from, Ms Carrie 🎵 |
